The Exchange
A stunning collaborative mural in São Paulo by two street artists, one Brazilian and one Ukrainian.
‘The Exchange’ campaign brought together famous Brazilian muralist, Eduardo Kobra, and the talented Ukrainian street artist Sasha Korban to co-create a mural that not only showcases Brazil and Ukraine’s shared love of street art, but both nations’ commitment to protecting the environment.
The mural combines the beauty of the environment with the destruction caused by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Multicoloured butterflies emerge from a cracked, traditional Ukrainian vase to represent both the damage done, as well as the rebirth of the environment as Ukraine and Brazil look to grow back greener.
Kobra’s signature multi-colour can be seen in a pair of hands which represent the strength of Ukraine and the resilience of the environment to overcome the destruction caused by war.
Korban’s response incorporates a traditional Ukrainian dancer who mimics the movement of the butterflies, which emerge from one side of the wall to the other, reinforcing the flight of freedom that Ukrainians hope to take.
The Ukrainian Institute had a vision to start an exchange between two artists that represent Brazil and Ukraine to build connection, understanding and a sense of shared value through culture and creativity.
Freuds Group, Freuds+ and Lawless have supported the Ukrainian Institute in bringing this to life, finding a way for people with shared passion-points to start a dialogue no matter their background or geography. This campaign is about togetherness – showcasing the importance of the environment and how vital it is to safeguard the lives, identity and livelihoods of children and future generations.
